“If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.” Matthew 10:13
In 2010, the Ellis Heights Neighborhood Association (now the West Gateway Coalition) issued a cry for help on behalf of an area of the city long in need. With their neighborhood situated outside the jurisdiction for federal assistance, the West Gateway Coalition formed a partnership with Rock Church called Project 1013. Together they responded by bringing a handful of people to clear and beautify a few blocks of one street that first year.
Since then, the amount of work done and the number of people involved has continued to increase, with local residents joining in the regeneration of their neighborhood. Project 1013 has expanded to facilitate greater impact in the area and the involvement of additional community groups, churches, and organizations.
The Rockford Register Star has described Project 1013 as lending a hand to “the poorest neighborhood in Rockford.” Most Ellis Heights residents are well below the poverty level. And many have given up hope, lacking the means to improve their living conditions.
In an effort to address a wider variety of needs, we are expanding our scope again — encompassing not only more projects, but work requiring a higher level of skill. Also, we are adding to our existing distribution of food baskets after the completion of the projects and around holidays. We look forward to partnering with you as we work to rebuild hope in our community!
